How to Care for Khakis

Many owners of khakis want to know more about how to properly care for them. From washing and drying to ironing these pants, we offer the following tips and advice.

Don’t Overwash Them

We all take pride in having clean clothes, but over washing khakis can result in their premature demise. Sometimes, washing can be surpassed. For example, many corduroy and denim materials can simply be freshened up with a stiff brush to remove loose debris and dirt.

You can even hang them in the bathroom and let the water flow and wash them before air drying. This makes it possible to reduce water usage, which decreases electricity costs and is beneficial for the environment. These small steps will keep your khakis deodorized between machine washings.

Flip Them Inside Out When Washing Khakis

To help maintain the hue of women’s and men’s khakis and to prevent fading and abrasion, experts recommend turning the material inside out before machine washing. You will also want to fasten any buttons and zip up zippers to prevent snagging damage and help maintain their shape.

Wash Your Khaki Pants In Cold Water

The vast majority of energy used in the laundry room stems from heating the water in the washing machine during laundry cycles. However, washing your khaki clothing using cold water is just as effective as using warm or hot water. An added benefit of washing in cold water is that your clothes endure less stress on them, especially when used in combination with the delicate cycle. This minimizes fraying and piling.

Skip The Dryer

By choosing to air dry your pants and reduce surface abrasion, use the sun by air drying them. This creates a crisp finish that is ideal for ironing seams. However, if you prefer a softer material surface, machine drying is recommended. Be aware that dryers use an abundance of energy and tend to wear down materials more rapidly than air drying.

The practice of machine drying causes a bit of environmental damage. Breaking out a clothes rack or drying line prevents undesirable shrinkage due to overheating. If you are short on time and need your clothes ready faster than air drying can provide, choose the lowest temperature setting you can to get them ready to wear on the fly.

Tips for Ironing Your Pants

Ironing your khakis is pivotal to their appearance. Turn your pants inside out and position them to start by pressing the pockets out so they are nice and neat. Next, lay the pants down flat on the ironing board. Iron the fly near the button and zipper before ironing them flat. While the pants are face up, iron them to a flat state before attacking the seams to set creases. Then repeat this for all four of the leg seams. Last, iron the waistband by slipping around the narrow end of your ironing board. Rotate the pants around the board to complete the process.

Use These Tips for Success

By taking heed to this advice, you can easily keep your khakis in great shape for years. If you need help with cleaning and pressing, a local dry cleaner can help.
