Deck the Halls

Ahh Christmas. That most wonderful season, full of joy, sharing, memories, and lots of food and drink no doubt! It is a time of year that a lot of people look forward to months in advance, with present buying planned meticulously, surprises that are kept secret, and new and inventive ways of decorating the house. So how about that then. What do we need to make our home an area of joy, celebration, colours and festivity? Let’s take a dive into how to make the most of this time of year, and to decorate your home as best you can.

Holiday Scent

  • Candles – Having Christmas candles set up around the house is an absolute must over the festive period. You can get all sorts of different scents and fragrances, leading anyone visiting your home being left in no doubt, that Christmas is certainly here.
  • Diffusers or Potpourri – You could go down this route, with fragrances ranging from spiced apple, pine, or cinnamon, all with that real festive scent and a certainty to raise your spirits.

Christmas Tree

  • Tree – The Christmas tree is the focal point, the epicentre of any well-decorated home over Christmas. It can be a real tree, which brings authenticity and that beautiful pine smell with it, or an artificial one, which is more sensible and functional. Whichever it is, be sure to put it in the right place, as it is there to be seen by as many people as possible. Next to the window is always best.
  • Lights – This is a big decision to make. Do you go with flashing lights? Or fairy lights? A nice, calm, relaxing warm white? Or out there, loud, and dazzling multicolour lights? Consider the other decorations going with the tree, and make it something that shows off who you are. Have a read of this blog, for more information on Christmas lights.
  • Ornaments – Baubles, tinsel, homemade decorations, and thematic decorations, such as bells, snowflakes and the like, all add to the personality of the tree. However, you want it, go for it. Hectic and busy, or well thought out and neat, do what you think looks best.
  • Tree Topper – A decision not to be taken lightly, people. Will it be an angel? Or a star? Or, a wildcard entrance, something unique and bit different this year.
  • Tree Skirt – To tidy up under the tree, and bring it all together with the presents, get a nice decorative cover in there, to really add that extra festive flavour.

Lighting

  • String Lights – A great way of adding another level of feeling into the home. You can pop these up around your windows, stick them up running around cupboards and the walls, or if you want to get a little fancy, why not use some glass jars, and see how that turns out? (They’ll look great, trust me).
  • Outdoor Lights – Light up your neighbourhood, and give all of those living nearby a shot of Christmas spirit, by adding lights to the outside of your home. You can hang them off your fence and gate, or place them on the exterior of your home. Give everyone a great Christmas show when they are driving past, and make them smile with those beautiful lights.

Advent Calendar

  • Home-made or Store Bought – No home is complete in the month of December, without everyone living there having their own advent calendar. The count down to Christmas is great, so why not add having a little cheeky treat everyday in there with it? Adults and kids love it alike, and it is a great chance to get together as a family, and share those little moments together.

Stockings

  • Personalised or Store Bought – Much like advent calendars, stockings are a must for all living in a household. Hang them from a place of your choice, and fill them up with little treats and gifts, ready for Christmas Day. Pop a block of coal in there, if the little ones have been playing up throughout the year. See how that goes down!

Table Decorations

  • Centrepiece – The centrepiece is where it all comes together, so things such as candles, ornaments, and greenery are a great way to have it looking stunning.
  • Placemats – Simple, but effective. Festive placemats show that you are covering all the bases, down to the smallest of details. No drink should do without one during the month of December.
  • Tablecloths and Napkins – Keep with the colour scheme of red, green and gold, or maybe go all out, and get the Christmas-themed ones. Both are excellent choices.

And there we have it. Share in the joy and love of Christmas with those nearest and dearest to you, in your home that is absolutely ready for the festive period with these decorating tips. I’ll drink to that! For more information where you are, take a look here.
