The word legend is used to describe the women who were willing to go against the odds and make themselves famous in the male-dominated industry of hip-hop. Although it’s common for female rappers to make their way to the top of the music industry and become household names, it wasn’t always like this for them. They had to overcome various hardships and setbacks along the way.
Throughout history, women have been the voice of generations of women in hip-hop, delivering relatable and thought-provoking lyrics that reflected various emotions and experiences. Whether it was about love, money, or sexual encounters, these women made sure to provide their fans with self-assurance and relatable tales.
This list serves as a tribute to some of the women who have made an impact on the industry with their dynamic lyricism and confident rap style.
1. Queen Latifah
During her early career, Queen Latifah was able to spread positive messages about Black women. She intentionally refrained from using the terms “b**tches” or “h**s” in her songs to support and encourage the next generation of talented female rappers.
As a multi-hyphenate actress and comedian, Queen Latifah has been able to establish herself as one of the most prominent and successful African-American women in the entertainment industry. She has been known for her roles in movies such as “Just Wright” and “Set It Off,” as well as her role as Khadijah in the hit TV show “Living Single.” She also briefly took up the piano to create her musical style.
Even though she has carved out a successful career in various areas of the entertainment industry, Queen Latifah remained focused on her roots as a talented rapper. Her message of empowerment and self-expression was what set her apart from other artists.
2. MC Lyte
As one of the first female hip-hop experts in the industry, MC Lyte has been able to make an impact on the industry with her dynamic and charismatic flow even when there was no online casino. She has also been able to carve out a successful career in various other areas of the entertainment industry. From acting to writing and recording songs, it’s been an amazing journey for the woman who started as a teenager. Her debut album, Lyte As A Rock, made her the first OG female rapper to release a solo album.
After releasing her debut album, Lyte became very popular with her fans. Her follow-up album, Eyes On This, was able to reach the Billboard 200. In 2022, she also helped to celebrate the contributions of female rappers by organizing “I Am Woman,” a program that highlighted the achievements of these women.
3. Salt-N-Pepa
Before the formation of Salt-n-Pepa, there were only a few all-female music groups in the industry. With perseverance, these Queen natives were able to break through and become the first all-women group to make an impact. Their first song, which was produced for a friend’s class project, was sent to a radio station.
The members of Salt-n-Pepa knew it was only a matter of time before they would become household names due to their music, which promoted sexuality and independence. Their hit songs “Push It” and “Very Necessary” helped them become chart-toppers.

5. Missy Elliott
Due to her contributions and achievements in the music industry, Grammy award-winning rapper and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Missy Elliott was the first female artist to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. She has paved the way for other aspiring female rappers by setting herself apart from the crowd with her distinct style and futuristic music videos.
Due to the sexualization of women in the music industry, there has been a lack of respect for how they are treated. With her outspoken style and unapologetic attitude, Elliott has broken this cycle.
Despite being diagnosed with Graves’ disease, Elliott was still able to rise above the situation and continue to make music for the younger generations. She is proud of what she has accomplished and shows no signs of slowing down.
